Wedding Etiquette
Make sure it’s only the bride blushing on the big day and pick out an appropriate gift! Did you know that in the past, wedding guests used to give the gift of fruits to the newly married to encourage fertility? Ah, the simple days. Nowadays there is much more difficult etiquette to be followed. And it’s getting more and more expensive. Every year the amount guests spend on average, on a wedding gift increases. In fact, wedding guests in the UK are spending 46% more on gifts than they did two years ago. Wedding guests are typically expected to buy gifts for the couple’s new home. The importance of wedding registries comes into play here. Couples tend to have wedding registries to indicate to their guests what items for the home they already own and what items they lack. That way guests won’t have to waste their money or time buying a gift that’s either unwanted or unnecessary. It also prevents guests from buying the same gift. Imagine the hassle of having to return 8 toasters! If the couple has a registry, it’s probably best to choose a gift from the list, unless you’re absolutely positive they would love a certain gift of their carefully thought-out list. If they don’t have a registry, choosing a present will be slightly more challenging. While buying flatware and glassware has been a traditional gift for newlyweds, romantic and eco-friendly presents have started to forge a new trend. Where people used to buy brand new pots and pans for the new couple, nowadays guests are opting for buying expensive Champagne. The reason is that now more than ever, couples start living together before getting married. As a result, couples tend to already have their own pots and pans, toaster and microwave. Champagne is a great wedding present as it's the ultimate celebratory beverage and fits in perfectly with the mood of a wedding. High quality common household items are also popular. For example, they might have loads of towels, but they probably don’t have high quality Egyptian cotton towels. They will definitely use and enjoy a gift of Egyptian cotton. As it's name suggests, Egyptian cotton comes from Egypt where the humid weather and rich soil makes a perfect environment for growing long fibre cotton. Long fibre cotton is notably fine, soft and durable and is also known for its extraordinary ability to soak up liquids. Egyptian cotton also retains colour longer and more vibrantly than most fabrics, so it looks amazing for a long time. Come out of the box and think about getting something they’ll enjoy. Most guests spend at least £43 on wedding gifts, according to a study done for Abbey Current Accounts. While £43 is the average, the study also claims that the amount guests spend on a gift depends their relation to the couple and that varies across the country. For most of the country, close family members (parents, siblings, cousins) and best friends are expected to spend at least £70. If you’re good friends with the couple, you should be spending at least £34. If your connection to the newlyweds is a bit more distant or if you’re an acquaintance or colleague, you’re only expected to spend about £23 on a gift. In Northern England, close relatives and best friends fork out a bit less. They’ll spend roughly £68 on a gift, while the average guest will spend about £40. In the South West of the country, however, close family and best friends are expected to spend £69, good friends spend £39 and acquaintances and colleagues spend about £24 on a wedding gift. Scots take it one further. On average, the typical wedding guest in Scotland will spend £49 on a wedding gift. Close relatives and best friends will shell out £78 on a wedding present, trumping the national average by £8!

Green Gifts
Green gifts are in this year as the push to prevent climate change is at an all time high. Practically any gift you give—whether it is for the newlyweds or the family—can be green. If you are a bride or a groom, think about selecting eco friendly gifts and fair-trade products and adding them to your registry. You’ll be doing a great service to the environment and eco friendly products tend to be high quality and durable as well. If you’re buying gift baskets or gift sets of any kind, you can probably find a green version of the same products. For example, there are great food and wine gift baskets that are organic and fair-trade. If you’re thinking about congratulating the newlyweds with wine, organic wine is a great choice. Organic wine is made from organically grown grapes that are grown in a healthy, sustainable way. No pesticides or chemicals are ever used in the growing or harvesting of the grapes, making organic wine extremely healthy for your body and the environment. Home decor is another popular avenue many people take when choosing wedding gifts. Bamboo is an eco-friendly and sustainable resource, so if you’re looking to buy the couple any furniture or decor, make sure it’s bamboo furniture. Bamboo is actually the fastest growing woody plant in the world. When it's harvested and made into furniture and decor, it has a lovely, smooth, light finish that looks as beautiful as any other kind of expensive lumber, without the negative environmental impact associated with cutting down trees or the high price tag. There are also other eco-friendly home decor items that are made of recycled materials that anyone would love to have in their home. If you’re like many others who choose to buy the newlyweds appliances for their new home, make sure you buy appliances that are energy-efficient. Energy efficient appliances can save the couple a lot of money in the long run and will be a welcome item in the home. Did you know that you can buy eco-friendly flatware and recycled glassware? Recycled glassware is as lovely as regular glassware and is usually cheaper and does the environment a lot of good. Recycled glassware is a traditional gift and buying the recycled version, can put a new twist in what can be a rather old gift idea. Other great green gift ideas for the bride include eco-friendly jewellery and organic beauty gift sets. These gifts are not only lovely, but organic beauty sets are actually healthier for your skin. If you really can’t think of a great gift for the bride and groom, let them choose their own! Give them a gift certificate to a store that offers eco-friendly products.
