  5. Adam Kelly - American Fiction in Transition: Observer-Hero Narrative, The ...
American Fiction in Transition is a study of the observer-hero narrative, a highly significant but critically neglected genre of the American novel. Through the lens of this transitional genre, the book explores the 1990s in relation to debates about the end of postmodernism, and connects the decade to other transitional periods in US literature. Novels by four major contemporary writers are examined: Philip Roth, Paul Auster, E. L. Doctorow and Jeffrey Eugenides. Each novel has a similar structure: an observer-narrator tells the story of an important person in his life who has died. But each story is equally about the struggle to tell the story, to find adequate means to narrate the transitional quality of the hero's life. In playing out this narrative struggle, each novel thereby addresses the broader problem of historical transition, a problem that marks the legacy of the postmodern era in American literature and culture.

  7. David Boucher - The Limits Of Ethics In International Relations: Natural ...
Ethical constraints on relations among individuals within and between societies have always reflected or invoked a higher authority than the caprices of human will. For over two thousand years natural law and natural rights were the constellations of ideas and presuppositions that fulfilled this role in the West, and exhibited far greater similarities than most commentators want to admit. Such ideas were the lens through which Europeans evaluated the rest of the world. In his major new book David Boucher rejects the view that natural rights constituted a secularization of natural law ideas by showing that most of the significant thinkers in the field, in their various ways, believed that reason leads you to the discovery of your obligations, while God provides the ground for discharging them. Furthermore, the book maintains that natural rights and human rights are far less closely related than is often asserted because natural rights can never be cast adrift from their religious foundations, whereas human rights, for the most part, have jettisoned the Christian metaphysics upon which both natural law and natural rights depended. Human rights theories, on the whole, present us with foundationless universal constraints on the actions of individuals, both domestically and internationally. Finally, one of the principal contentions of the book is that these purportedly universal rights and duties almost invariably turn out to be conditional, and upon close scrutiny end up being 'special' rights and privileges as the examples of multicultural encounters, slavery, racism, and women's rights demonstrate.

Whether it involves remaking an old Hollywood movie, projecting a quiet 16mm film, or constructing a bombastic multi-screen environment, cinema now takes place not just in the movie theatre and the home, but also in the art gallery and the museum. The author of this engaging study takes stock of this development, offering an in-depth inquiry into its genesis, its defining features, and the ramifications it has for art and cinema alike. Through the lens of contemporary art history, she examines cinema studies' great disciplinary obsession - namely, what cinema was, is, and will become in a digital future.

Preserving the order and structure that brought security to your baby's day, peaceful sleep in your baby's nights and stability in your home is still the priority, but now it must be viewed through a new developmental lens. 22. Yukon Scope 6-100x100 Spotting Scope
The Yukon 6-100x100 is a revolutionary spotting scope that provides high quality image at magnifications ranging from 6x from 100x. For low magnification observation the device utilizes the 25 mm lens. Linear zooming allows magnification adjustments between 6 and 25x. When more magnification is desired the flip of a switch shifts the light path from one lens to the other. With the 100 mm objective lens zooming capabilities increase to 25-100x magnification. The enormous light gathering capability of the 100mm lens creates a bright and clear picture in nearly all viewing conditions including twilight. In accordance to Yukon Advanced Optics' tradition the Yukon 100x's design provides the user both power quality and comfort. To prevent viewing fatigue or discomfort a specially designed adjustable 45-degree rotating eyepiece is utilized to suit the viewer's comfort from any angle even when lying on the ground. Both digital and photo camera adapters are available to be used with Yukon 100x.The unit accommodates both photographic and spotting scope tripods and can double as a telescope for late night stargazing. The high quality optics is guarded by a durable composite body. The scope?s body is surprisingly lightweight and compact making it easy to transport. Yukon 6-100x100 delivers crystal-clear magnification from 6x to 100x with no distortion or loss of image quality. Yukon's engineers have achieved this exclusive capability by using two multi-coated objective lenses one with a 25mm aperture and the other with a 100 mm aperture. Both lenses share a common ocular lens which allows for a smooth transition as the viewer adjusts the scope to the desired magnification. 6x to 100x Magnification Range Dual Light Path Optics Shared Common Ocular Lens High Light Gathering Capability with 100mm Lens 45-Degree Revolving Eyepiece Open Field or Long Distance Observation

  23. Barry E. Prentice - Concepts of Transportation Economics
Transportation is the world's largest invisible industry. Modern society is completely dependent on transportation to sustain its way of life, and it is all around us constantly. Yet the economics of transportation is a mystery to most people. Why do air fares rise and fall? Why do urban transit systems struggle to survive and require such large public subsidies? Why does freight transport cost more to move in one direction than an equal distance in another? Why is the government so heavily involved in transportation? Concepts of Transportation Economics provides explanations to these queries and many more, as well-renowned experts in the field, Barry E Prentice and Darren Prokop interpret the unique dynamics underlying transportation through the lens of applied economics, and demonstrate that the operations of transportation are completely logical and obvious once the concepts that underlie business decisions and consumer reactions are explained.

  25. Elissa Washuta - My Body Is a Book of Rules
As Elissa Washuta makes the transition from college kid to independent adult, she finds herself overwhelmed by the calamities piling up in her brain. When her mood-stabilizing medications aren't threatening her life, they're shoving her from depression to mania and back in the space of an hour. Her crisis of American Indian identity bleeds into other areas of self-doubt; mental illness, sexual trauma, ethnic identity, and independence become intertwined. Sifting through the scraps of her past in seventeen formally inventive chapters, Washuta aligns the strictures of her Catholic school education with "Cosmopolitan"'s mandates for womanhood, views memories through the distorting lens of "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," and contrasts her bipolar highs and lows with those of Britney Spears and Kurt Cobain. Built on the bones of fundamental identity questions as contorted by a distressed brain, "My Body Is a Book of Rules" pulls no punches in its self-deprecating and ferocious look at human fallibility.

  27. Philip Mcmichael - Development and Social Change: A Global Perspective ...
Explores development through historical narrative and examines the globalization/development paradox through in-depth case studies. In his Fifth Edition of Development and Social Change: A Global Perspective, author Philip McMichael examines the project of globalization and its instabilities (climate, energy, food, financial crises) through the lens of development and its origins in the colonial project. The book continues to help students make sense of a complex world in transition and explains how globalization became part of public discourse. Filled with case studies, this text makes the intricacies of globalization concrete, meaningful, and clear for students and moves them away from simple social evolutionary views, encouraging them to connect social change, development policies, global inequalities and social movements. The book challenges students to see themselves as global citizens whose consumption decisions have real social and ecological implications. Key Features: * a world-historical perspective that situates globalization in the declining fortunes of the postwar development project, and considers current global limits and possibilities * a political perspective that views development and globalization as discursive practices managed by historic elite groupings, as mechanisms of power and world ordering * an ecological perspective drawing attention to the environmental consequences of development and attempts to reintegrate social life in ecological cycles * an emphasis on resistance and social movements as actors shaping the meaning and direction of these projects, in addition to building alternatives * a series of case studies that allow in-depth examination of development/globalization dilemmas and paradoxes to interrupt the idea of a linear process. New to the Fifth Edition: * developmental impacts of the rise of the BRICS * structural adjustment and new inequalities come to the global North * 'de-growth' philosophies * the re-centering of agricult

  28. Adam David Morton - Revolution and State in Modern Mexico: The Political ...
Now in an updated edition, this groundbreaking study develops a new approach to understanding the formation of the postrevolutionary state in Mexico. In a shift away from dominant interpretations, Adam David Morton considers the construction of the revolution and the modern Mexican state through a fresh analysis of the Mexican Revolution, the era of import substitution industrialization, and neoliberalism. Throughout, the author makes interdisciplinary links among geography, political economy, postcolonialism, and Latin American studies in order to provide a new framework for analyzing the development of state power in Mexico. He also explores key processes in the contestation of the modern state, specifically through studies of the role of intellectuals, democratization and democratic transition, and spaces of resistance. As Morton argues, all these themes can only be fully understood through the lens of uneven development in Latin America. Centrally, the book shows how the history of modern state formation and uneven development in Mexico is best understood as a form of passive revolution, referring to the ongoing class strategies that have shaped relations between state and civil society. As such, Morton makes an important interdisciplinary contribution to debates on state formation relevant to Mexican studies, postcolonial and development studies, historical sociology, and international political economy by revitalizing the debate on the uneven and combined character of development in Mexico and throughout Latin America. In so doing, he convincingly contends that uneven development can once again become a tool for radical political economy analysis in and beyond the region. A substantive new epilogue engages the main theoretical debates that have emerged since the book was first published while also exploring the dominant geographies of power and resistance that are shaping state space in Mexico in the twenty-first century.

  30. Andreas Walmsley - Youth Employment in Tourism and Hospitality
In an era of continued globalisation and economic-restructuring youth employment constitutes what many commentators regard as one of the key policy issues of our time. This important new book gives the first comprehensive overview of key concepts, theories and knowledge relating to youth employment in the Tourism sector. Specifically 'Youth Employment in Tourism and Hospitality' discusses rates of youth employment in tourism and hospitality, working conditions for youth and the role of youth employment in tourism in developing countries. It explores barriers to youth employment, from both supply and demand-side perspectives. It reviews the relationship between education, training and youth employment before looking at the education to work transition through the lenses of career decision-making and career development theories. It also discusses the role of tourism internships in early work socialisation, as well as graduate entrepreneurship in tourism. It is essential reading for those delivering and developing tourism programmes, and for students of tourism and hospitality. It also appeals to policy-makers and managers in the wide range of sectors that constitute tourism and hospitality and beyond as well as those in related fields such as education, human resources management and career guidance.
